Canadian statutory holidays explained

In Canada, public holidays are set at two levels. The federal list applies to federally regulated workplaces — banks, airlines, telecoms, the federal public service — under the Canada Labour Code. Every province and territory then sets its own list for everyone else. Most dates overlap, but not all, so it helps to know which is which.

Federal statutory holidays

  • New Year’s Day — January 1
  • Good Friday — the Friday before Easter
  • Victoria Day — the Monday on or before May 24
  • Canada Day — July 1
  • Labour Day — first Monday in September
  • National Day for Truth and Reconciliation — September 30 (since 2021)
  • Thanksgiving — second Monday in October
  • Remembrance Day — November 11
  • Christmas Day and Boxing Day — December 25 and 26

When a holiday falls on a weekend

For fixed-date holidays, federally regulated employees generally get the next working day off instead — for example, when Christmas Day is a Saturday, the days off are usually Monday 27 and Tuesday 28 December. Provincial rules differ, so check with your employer or province.

Provincial holidays

Several provinces add a mid-February holiday, most often called Family Day (third Monday in February), and many observe a Civic Holiday on the first Monday in August under various local names. Quebec observes Saint-Jean-Baptiste Day on June 24 and National Patriots’ Day instead of Victoria Day, and Easter Monday is a holiday for some employers. Not every federal holiday is a provincial one either: Remembrance Day and the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation are not general holidays in every province. Our Canadian calendars mark the federal list as statutory holidays and show common provincial days as observances, so you can see both at a glance.
